Let’s Read

Imagine a world where you can’t read!

Reading is the key to unlocking a child’s full potential.

Inability to read can bring alienation and delinquency, and entrench poverty.

Let’s Read is passionate about the importance of literacy and tackling the problems of low literacy and the effect this has on the whole of our community. We help to improve the literacy of young people in the Woking area in two main ways:

  • by giving free books to the pupils at 10 or so primary schools in Woking. Over the past 20 years we have given over 50,000 books. The pupils typically get a book of their choice each term and at present we are distributing about 800 books a term.
  • by providing one-to-one tuition at four of Woking’s primary schools. Each school year we help about sixty pupils, whose schools see them as being behind in their reading skill. Let’s Read is a registered charity, constituted as a company limited by guarantee.
  • Our funding is principally through donations from individuals or private sector organisations, either of money or of books. Every penny of the money donated for books is used to buy books for children. Currently, Woking Borough Council provide a grant and the use of a small office. All our reading tutors and book-gifting staff are volunteers.
