Literacy
Steve Thomas our Chief Executive was named as a Reading Champion for the National Reading Campaign by the National Literacy Trust.
Our researches into successful and proven interventions to improve poor literacy led us to Real Action; a community led educational charity set up in 1996 to provide effective solutions to some of the most challenging educational problems in a neighbourhood designated as exceptionally disadvantaged.
Three of the leading experts in teaching reading using synthetic phonics, Ruth Miskin, Irina Tyk and Katie Ivens have given their personal support and advice to the Charity in launching our Reading Projects.
In January 2006 our pilot programme was launched with fourteen teenage students at The Bishop David Brown School. These students average reading age was 9 years or lower.
Since the start of our Charity, considerable interest from our community has been expressed and we our now supporting four local schools with reading tuition. To date more than 1000 children have benefitted.
