Literacy Programme

Let’s Read currently has two teams of volunteer tutors who visit four Woking primary schools on a Tuesday and Thursday morning during term time. They take ten or so children at each school and teach reading and writing using books and materials supplied by the charity.

The use of ‘phonics’ to teach reading is now standard in primary schools in Surrey. A number of phonics schemes exist and Let’s Read uses the Read Write Inc version developed by our patron Ruth Miskin.

Phonics is new to some of our older tutors but Let’s Read provides training so that they understand what the children will have been taught and how they can read words for themselves using the phonics they know.

Let’s Read uses the staged reading resources from Read Write Inc which build on the multiple phonics with their different spellings, used in the English language. The resources range from basic to competent primary reader level.
